Charles Willson Peale was a well-known American portrait artist. He was born in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, and as a young man was an apprentice to a saddler. He taught himself to paint by emulating artists such as John Hesselius. Peale did much traveling in his lifetime and gained popularity for his paintings. Some of his work (besides Port Baltimore Surveyor Daniel Delozier and General Ortho Holland Williams) include portraits of: Washington, Lafayette and Tilghman at Yorktown, William Pitt, William Paca, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, and Ben Franklin. Below are several of the more famous portraits painted by Peale. Later in his life he painted works such as The Exhumation of the Mastodon (exhibited in The Peale Museum, Baltimore) and the Maryland State House in 1789.
